To me, this evokes flying low over a mangrove swamp in the South Pacific. But it is only a little patch of lichen clinging to the shaded north end of an old chicken house. Do you see the dry husk of a fly?

Having driven by, albeit at 100 yards distance, this remarkably dense lichen formation many times on my Hessel Road explorations, one morning I knocked on the door and got permission to shoot just as the sun was swinging around to hide behind this north facing wall. By the time I set up the camera, extended my bellows for the extreme 4" closeup, and calculated the compensating exposure, I had to hold a pop-out reflector in my left hand to paint the hidden sun, while reading my meter at full right arm's lenght. Lucky shot!

These details were hiding from the light of noon in a narrow gap between two farm buildings. Perhaps you see the "owl" hiding in the knot, or perhas glistening constelations of stars instead.

Last late light from the West sneaking under a thick coastal fog required such a long exposure that, due to "reciprocity failure" of the film, the abundant blue light was absorbed much more quickly than the scant red, transforming this old chicken house from shades of faded oxblood to vivid lapis and seafoam blues

Once your eyes recover from the dazzle of "unnatural" yellows, greens, oranges you realize that all colors belong to nature.

Radial marks from the 19th Century sawmill's circular saw are still visible under the old barn's multi-layered lichen enbellishment. Not shown in this crop are straight-accross band saw marks on the lower remains of an attached shed. Clearly this barn's planks were sawn in different eras.
