I have spent many happy days amids the crystal skies, sparking waters, and endless open vists following US 299 E, US 395, and many much smaller routes through and over the mountain spine of California. Other than Lake Tahoe and Mammoth, these areas are far less travelled than most of the state yet offer some of the most beautiful climate and scenery.
